Protein - basics

Protein:

• peptide bonds of amino acids into long chains
• a string of molecules held together by peptide bonds

Amino Acid:

• amine: NH2, nitrogen, bonded to second or alpha carbon
• acid: O2, oxygen, bonded to first carbon
• attached to a chain of carbon atoms
• carbon chain, oil, lipid, durable, flexible
• abilitty to chain in peptide bonds

Peptide bond

• dehydraded bonds between:
  
  • amine - NH2 nitrogen
  • carboxyl - COOH carbon-oxygen
  • 'N-C-C' - 'N-C-C' - 'N-C-C'....peptides
• required for all life, including
  • fungi
  • cells
  • viruses
  • bacteria
  • leukocytes
  • hemoglobin
