Brushing

  • Most dental decay and root canals are on the left upper side of the mouth.
  • This is due to right handed people grinding their gums away brushing.
  • Brush the teeth, not the gums.
  • Point the bristles towards the ceiling or the floor, not sideways.
  • Brush the crowns of teeth, not the gums
    • Sodium (salt) or baking powder (contains sodium) is good for brushing
    • Some toothpastes are salty (Saltz brand from Japan)

Cavities

  • Known in medicine - enamel can heal from a cavity
  • Most cavities are caused by bacteria (strep)
  • Bacteria form a protective layer called plaque
  • Removing the bacteria allows the body to heal enamel
    • Xylitol, in chewing gum, inhibits bacteria
    • Ask your dentist about xylitol, many products now available

Aspirin for Toothache

Aspirin is the same as acetyl-salicylic-acid

  • Do this ONLY 2 times per week.
    • Not good for people with stomach ulcers
    • Caution for people who bruise easily
  • Break a regular aspirin (325mg) in half or quarters
  • Hold part of an aspirin between teeth where it hurts
  • Let it dissolve over a few minutes
  • Wait a full day to use the other half in the same way
  • Do not do this more than 2 times
  • Can do it again a full week later
    • Time to heal can take a week
    • Aspirin's effects are long lasting
    • If toothache comes back months later do it again
